Letter: Is this hike necessary? (June 24, 2014)

The Apple Valley Town Council vote to raise the sewer rates leaves me with several questions. I did a comparison with the City of Fullerton. Fullerton has a population of 126,000, that is about 40 percent more than Apple Valley. However, even if you double Fullerton’s rate you are not close to Apple Valley’s rate.

Fullerton’s two month sewer rate is less than $5, or less than $2.50 a month. Yet the Town of Apple Valley needs to raise its rate to $31.43 a month. The Town of Apple Valley says this rate increase is to recoup fees paid to Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority.

The Town said the Town’s Sewer Fund cannot sustain the increased cost.

I would like to know why the Town doesn’t have a problem sustaining the Golf Course for which it spent millions above the escrow instructions and purchase agreement requirements?
