Special meeting scheduled to inform citizens about water system ownership

The Town Council of Apple Valley will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. to inform citizens about the possible purchase of the Town’s municipal water system presently owned and operated by a private company, Apple Valley Ranchos Water Company.

The Town has expressed strong interest in purchasing its municipal water system in order to help moderate customer water rates, which have soared in the past 10 years. The Town Council also is concerned because AVR’s parent company is considering the sale of AVR to a large investor-owned Canadian company.

As part of its evaluation of a potential purchase, the Town recently completed a business valuation of the water system. The public is strongly encouraged to attend the meeting where the valuation and related legal matters will be explained in detail. In addition, information will be provided on the benefits of public community ownership, how the Town might pay for the cost of acquisition, and possible next steps in the process.

The meeting will be held at the Town of Apple Valley Conference Center, 14975 Dale Evans Parkway, adjacent to Town Hall. The appraisal is available for review under the “resources” section of the website, www.avh2ours.com.
